 Katy Diana Hazlett is the only child of Ryan Hazlett, a cop, and his wife Charlotte, a high school teacher. She was born and raised in River Forest, Illinois, a northern suburb not far from Chicago. For as long as she can remember, she has been in awe of her father's career and raptly listened to all of his stories about the bad guys he'd busted. By the time she was just eight years old, she had decided that she was going to be a cop too. Katy was always a little different than kids her age. She was a tomboy, preferring to play with toy guns, ride bikes and get dirty than play with the dolls her mom gave her, dress up in frilly dresses and have tea parties. When she starting getting to the age where her friends all had crushes on boy band members and boys in their class, she didn't feel the same. She pretended, for their sake and her parents' sake, and even struck up a good friendship with a boy she pretended to have a crush on. But she found herself more interested in admiring her girl friends than her boy friends. It wasn't until middle school that she learned the term lesbian and felt that it was exactly the word she'd been looking for to describe herself. But with all the negative connotations surrounding it, and her fear that her parents would reject her, she kept it to herself and even went out with a few boys during her eighth and ninth grade years. She slept with her freshman boyfriend all of once and promptly decided she didn't want to hide anymore. She came out to her parents, who were much more supportive than she'd thought they'd be, and soon after openly began pursuing girls. She's slept with several girls but has only had one former girlfriend, an Australian exchange student named, Erica Simms, who she dated for most of her sophomore year. When Erica's host family revealed the relationship to Erica's parents, they didn't realize Erica's parents were not accepting of her sexuality. Erica was immediately withdrawn from the exchange program and brought home to Australia, breaking them apart and breaking Katy's heart. Katy spent her junior year focused on her studies. It helped her put Erica, who she never heard from again, behind her and let her heart start to heal. She became more popular when she got involved in girls' softball and basketball and reconnected with the boy she'd faked a crush on in elementary school, Josh Morgan. She began feeling happier, more like herself than she had in the past year. During an elective pottery class, she met Gaby Campbell-Lopez. Gaby was a strong-willed, sassy freshman girl determined to climb the social ladder and be the school's new it girl. Although Katy had seen her in the hallway acting the role of a mean girl, she was always so shy around her. So she'd tease her and prod at her, sometimes just to make her blush. Before she'd even realized it, she was falling in love with the younger girl. Things progressed very slowly, as Katy discovered that despite having two moms, Gaby was still struggling with her sexuality. Katy took her time getting to know her, letting her pace their relationship and learning to exercise every ounce of self-control she possessed. The tension between them was palpable, and they shared strong feelings for each other - all of which culminated in their very first kiss at the end of September, six months after Gaby first caught Katy's eye. PERSONALITY Katy is a genuinely good person. She's kind, loyal, reliable, trustworthy and responsible. She's unfailingly polite and respectful and has impressed lots of parents in her day. She never went through a rebellious phase and so was treated as an adult, an equal, very early on in her life. She can be sarcastic and sassy but is very socially apt, thanks to a natural grace and a good ear for listening. She's very traditional when it comes to dating and very romantic, but she can be a bit shy about revealing her feelings. She's tough and has a very thick skin (a trait she'll find useful when she becomes a cop, her father says).
